till death do us part

Monday. 06. 2. 2008.

I’m watching this show called Outsiders. Tonight’s episode is about people who get married young. By young, we’re talking about teenagers getting married.

One of the couples featured on the show has the bride has the god awful looking and down right gaudy wedding dress from Wales. Her bridesmaids all had god awful looking dresses too. Their wedding was referred to as the “ultimate chav wedding” in some news papers.

There was another couple made up of an 18 year old girl and a 50 year old man. That just gave me the willies. They were laughing about how she’s older than his daughter and he’s older than her mother. They met when she was 16. Apparently because of the marriage her family have cut ties with her.

Then there was the Indian couple where the girl was 11 when they got engaged to some guy in Pakistan and they got married when she was 16. On the episode, she’s now 18 and was on her way to the airport to pick up her husband who can finally live in England. She was joking about how if she does something wrong she can just say, “How would I know what being a good wife means, I was only 16 when I got married.”

I’m sure there are plenty of people who are ready for marriage at a young age but some of these girls that were on tv spoke of marriage without really realizing what it’s really like. Unlike Snow White or Cinderella, “happy ever after” is not the end. All the girls talk about how they can’t wait to see their boyfriends everyday and how great it will be to be a wife. It just gave me the willies.
