Fredrik and I are watching Octopussy. They have been showing James Bond movies on TV every Saturday. In Octopussy, James goes to East Germany. My question is, during the Soviet ruling, did the Germans there have to learn Russian??

I was really young when there was an eastern block. I remember asking my mother about why there is a East and West Germany. When I was young, I thought most European countries were divided east and west.

I tried to make biff à la lindström yesterday. It turned out ok. It’s not salty enough and we didn’t have any capers. I also tried to form them using the Hello Kitty onigiri/rice molds. Unfortunately they did not turn out looking anything like the intended shapes. They looked just like the hand formed ones. But for those who don’t know of this dish, it’s a bit like a Salisbury steak. Except that there is also chopped red beets.

So here’s how I made it. I used about 600g of ground beef.

I finely chopped ½ an onion and a couple cloves of garlic.

Red beets stain the hands. Since I was gonna go out last night, I decided that I didn’t want red/pink stained hands. I wore my rubber gloves (thoroughly washed with soap and hot water) while chopping the picked red beets.

I used as much beets as I thought would be enough. I love to eat pickled red beets just as is. It’s also eaten with pyttipanna.

So you mix the chopped onions, garlic, red beets and ground beef together. I added a splash of milk to the mixture so it wouldn’t be so dry and 1 egg to bind the mix.

As you can see in the picture, the ones shaped with the onigiri/rice molds didn’t look very defined at all. Once I pan fried them, they ended up looking even less defined. So I decided that I really didn’t need to give myself more work to do. So I just hand formed the rest in the relatively same size. I like my food small. (^-^)

I pan fried the biff and unfortunately due to the time constraints, didn’t get to enjoy it as my lunch but I did get to sample 1. Usually it’s served with potatoes and brown sauce. We had it for dinner today with a creamy pasta.

good times

Last night was all sorts of good times. I was in charge of doors and despite some really BORING moments, I still had a good time. Fredrik’s band was awesome. They played last in the night so I got to watch their set without any disruptions.

I got a bit bored so I made paper cranes out of the flyers (advertising a metal show on pastel paper) they had by the door.

More pictures from the show at my flickr.
